BMI cut-offs

Is your BMI 23+ and waist size 35.4″+? Then you should start worrying

New Body Mass Index Cut-Offs In India:

23 and above – Overweight
25 and above – Clinically obese

Unhealthy Waist Circumference:

Men – 35.4″ and above
Women – 31.5″ and above

Your body mass index and waist size is a clue to whether you’re at high risk for type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and heart disease. Balanced diet, regular physical activity and lifestyle management play a key role in prevention and control of many diseases.

Though globally a body mass index of 25 is accepted as normal, for Asian Indians this value is considered higher because at lower body mass index they tend to accumulate higher fat percentage which is the actual cause behind developing various other medical disorders and diseases.

Note:

BMI is a gross estimate for the amount of fat in your body. It tells you whether you need to lose weight or not. Not all adults who have a body mass index in the range labelled “healthy”are at their most healthy weight. They may have lots of fat but very little muscle. Similarly, if you are an athlete or exercise a lot, then you may have lots of muscle and less fat and if your body mass index is more than the normal range, then it may still be healthy.

  1. Hi Loveleen, I have a BMI of around 31 and my age is 34. I am thinking that its about time that i should start reducing my weight. My query is whether diet plan can really help reduce weight withoout serious exercising? And esp when someone doesnt have much control over eating.
